IT26 MSTE STEM WORKSHOP on renewable energy
31 janv. 2026The STEM activity took place in the physics laboratory and was organized as a cooperative learning workshop within the Erasmus framework. Students were divided into mixed groups, including students from the scientific high school course, the language-oriented high school course, and Erasmus students from France, with the aim of understanding the functioning of solar thermal systems for domestic hot water production. Peer-to-peer learning played a key role: students with a scientific background explained the principles and functioning of the solar thermal system to their peers, using English as a common working language. This approach supported both content learning and communication skills. In the first phase, students analysed the theoretical foundations of solar energy and the main mechanisms of heat transfer, building a shared scientific framework. They then examined a diagram of a solar thermal system, identifying its main components and discussing their functions collaboratively. In the second phase, students observed a hands-on demonstration using a solar thermal system available in the laboratory, focusing on the connection between solar panels and the storage tank and on temperature measurements through sensors. In the final phase, students worked with an Excel spreadsheet to analyse the domestic hot water needs of a family, discussing how solar thermal systems can meet these needs while reducing energy consumption and environmental impact. The activity encouraged reflection on sustainability and informed decision-making.
The workshop enhanced students’ scientific knowledge, MSTE competences, and understanding of renewable energy technologies. Through active engagement and peer collaboration, students developed communication skills, critical thinking, and confidence in using English to discuss scientific and environmental topics. The activity strengthened awareness of sustainability and responsible citizenship, highlighting the role of renewable energy in addressing real-life challenges. Working in mixed-nationality groups also promoted inclusion, intercultural exchange, and shared responsibility, fully aligning with the Olympic value of Engage and the objectives of the Erasmus programme.
