DC- SHARE - ORGANISING A SCHOOL SPORT EVENT
26 avr. 2024
The ACTIVITY was developed as part of a teaching unit on the language of sports and physical activity in
the English class for first year students of the linguistic course.
The class was divided into groups of three or four students each, who were asked to organize a
theoretical sport event to be held at school involving the entire student population, with the following
requirements:
- Each event had to include a minimum of three different sports, of which at least one had to be
an individual sport and one a team sport. The students were also encouraged to explore the
possibility of including sports which are not commonly practiced in physical education
lessons, or which are traditional of different countries. The only restiction imposed was that
the sports the students proposed could be realistically practised in a school setting, and
therefore that they could be included in a limited budget and safety considerations.
- The event had to be organized in its entirety in order to involve the student population of their
school. We therefore discussed possible strategies such as the creation of different types of
competitions, and how to distribute large numbers of students in teams. Additionally, each
group was asked whether they wanted their event to be an elective or a compulsory activity.
- A reasonable timetable for the event had to be proposed, including the number of hours and
days to be dedicated to the event had to be specified, as well as a possible period during the
school year in which such an event could be possible. The students were also asked to
consider whether it would be a better strategy to run the entire event inside of a week or if
separate moment over the course of several weeks could be a more convenient solution.
- The possibility of creating a ranking if the event was structured as a competition, and whether
a prize could also be offered.
- The logistics had to be considered, especially with regards to which locations and equipment
would be necessary for each sport, and whether the students taking part in the event would
need any particular kind of clothing.
- How to advertise the event to the school, with the creation of a pamphlet to be theoretically
distributed to the rest of the school.
The project aimed first of all at expanding the student’s vocabulary on the topic of sport and sport
events, and to improve their presentation skill. It also was designed in order so stimulate
organizational and problem-solving skills, group work and cooperation, and digital skills.
