The activity was based on the viewing of the film I, Tonya (2017), followed by a guided discussion, debate, and a creative screenwriting workshop. After the screening, students were encouraged to express their opinions and reactions, discussing aspects such as characters, themes, genre, and style, as well as the historical and sporting context of the events portrayed.Through a teacher-led presentation, students analysed the film’s narrative structure, its use of multiple and contradictory points of view, and its reflection on media influence, responsibility, and ethical judgment. Particular attention was given to Tonya Harding’s figure as both an Olympic athlete and a person, exploring her personal conflicts, background, and the values — or lack thereof — reflected in her choices. The debate focused on key ethical questions related to sportsmanship, respect for rules and opponents, and the consequences of unethical behaviour in sport and civic life. Students were invited to reflect on how personal history, social environment, and media pressure can influence athletes’ actions. In the final phase, students took part in a writing workshop. They were asked to rewrite an existing scene, imagine a new scene, or create a narrative episode from Tonya Harding’s life that could represent a turning point, helping her develop self-respect, ethical awareness, and personal growth as both a person and an athlete.

The activity enhanced students’ critical and ethical awareness, enabling them to analyse complex characters and situations beyond simplistic judgments. Students developed argumentative skills, empathy, and the ability to engage respectfully in discussion, reflecting on the universal importance of respect, responsibility, and ethical behaviour in sport and society. The writing workshop fostered creativity and self-expression, allowing students to reinterpret the Olympic values of respect and fairness through narrative. Overall, the activity contributed to a deeper understanding of sport as a human and cultural experience, closely aligned with CAEC objectives and Olympic education principles.
