Aims and skills targeted​

To develop essential baking skills, including oven management, the creaming method, and basic cake decorating techniques, fostering confidence in practical cooking abilities.​​

To create a supportive and inclusive learning environment where students can collaborate, share ideas, and express their creativity in a relaxed and enjoyable setting.​​

To promote teamwork, communication, and problem-solving as students work together to achieve a shared goal, strengthening interpersonal and collaborative skills.​

Description :​

In addition to baking, the class will emphasise creativity as students brainstorm and share decoration ideas, adding a personal touch to their queencakes under the theme of Justice, Determination and Liberty. The groups will then proudly present their finished cakes to teachers and school staff, highlighting their teamwork, creativity, and shared achievements. This moment of celebration will reinforce the bonds formed throughout the activity while showcasing the students’ collaborative efforts.​

At the conclusion of the session, students will have the chance to taste and evaluate their creations, reflecting on their experience and celebrating their success as a team. Teachers will facilitate a class discussion on the importance of home baking, exploring its cultural, practical, and social significance. Students will also compare Irish baked goods, such as queencakes, to traditional treats from Erasmus partner countries, like French pasteries. This discussion will deepen their cultural understanding, providing a platform for students to share stories and insights about food traditions in their own countries.​

This activity combines hands-on learning with cultural exchange, allowing students to forge lasting friendships, develop practical skills, and gain a greater appreciation for collaboration, teamwork, and the joy of baking.

 Results:​

Students successfully produced a batch of 12 queencakes, beautifully decorated with melted chocolate and sprinkles, showcasing their newly developed baking and creative skills.​

·  Working together in mixed groups, students collaborated effectively as a team, learning from one another and sharing techniques, ideas, and cultural perspectives throughout the activity.​

·  Erasmus students had the unique opportunity to experience a Home Economics class for the first time, gaining insight into practical life skills, such as baking and teamwork, which are not typically part of their curriculum.​

·  The session provided a meaningful cultural exchange, fostering a sense of accomplishment, friendship, and a deeper appreciation for collaborative learning in a supportive environment.
