Inequality in sport: Disabled athletes and sportswomen: same fight?

This learning sequence encouraged pupils to investigate how gender and disability influence access to and success in sport, while revealing the often invisible barriers—such as funding, media coverage, facilities, and social attitudes—that shape opportunities. The activity opened with a video from a British primary school showing how job‑related stereotypes take root early in life, followed by a mind‑mapping session in which students identified common assumptions about men and women. They then explored the consequences of these stereotypes and considered other groups who may also be affected, particularly disabled people.

Further videos highlighting inequalities in sport related to gender and disability deepened their awareness. Building on these insights, the students created a quiz on the challenges faced by sportswomen and disabled athletes, which will be shared on the school’s Digital Workspace. Using the same questions, they also designed a Kahoot for an upcoming hosting week.

To conclude, they reflected on a “Privilege Walk” activity that could be used with foreign partners to spark discussion about privilege, barriers, and exclusion in sport—an effective way to make abstract concepts like systemic inequality feel concrete.

Overall, the pupils strengthened their understanding of inequalities in sport and developed greater empathy. By producing tools that can be reused within the school community, they consolidated their learning and contributed meaningfully to raising awareness
