On Tuesday 21st October, our schools debate team proposed the motion ‘Disinformation is the greatest threat to global peace in 2025’.

Sacred Heart Newry acted as the opposition with both teams highlighting strong arguments with clear refutes and rebuttals. Our school proposed how disinformation ultimately linked to war, politics, social and cultural consequences and the wider international dimension. Our proposition remained strong when faced with refutes and rebuttals by the opposition.

The opposing team referenced how physical war was a bigger threat to global peace and how disinformation from digital platforms is non-existent in third world countries. Our team countered well, clearly stating how disinformation is also spread through biased and far right papers and word of mouth compared to just digital platforms. Moreover, our team solidified this further by referring to dictatorships throughout history where such disinformation impacted global peace without the use of digital media.

Our proposing team also strongly refuted how third world countries have no relevance with regards to digital access to disinformation as seen in the West. Our team members highlighted how disinformation from the West targeted those from third world countries and ethnic minority backgrounds which ultimately sparked xenophobia and in turn, became a threat to global peace.

Well Done to our debate members of Hugh (Captain), Éadaoin, Niamh, Muna, Éabha, Molly, Maura and Lilia in their first debate of 2025.
