On Tuesday 30th January, the Junior Ambassadors, together with Senior Ambassador, Mrs C Carroll, took part in a Webinar with the MEP Ciáran Cuffe.

He conducted the webinar from his office in Brussels and spoke to the students about his role as an MEP in the European Parliament. He outlined to the students that he was one of 13 Irish MEP’S and that there are 705 MEP’s in total across the 27 member states, who sit mainly in seven political groups and their work is spread across topic-focused committees. Cíaran Cuffe sits in the Greens/EFA group and his main priorities are housing, energy and transport.

He outlined to the students the role that the European Parliament has in making new laws, for example the end of roaming charges, consumer rights with regards to faulty electrical equipment together with Erasmus student exchanges. He also spoke about the importance of cooperation across the EU member states to getting legislation enacted into law.

He ended his webinar by taking questions from the students about what a typical day is like, how he got into political life and what is the most satisfying/frustrating thing about his work as an MEP. This webinar gave the students a great insight into the work of an MEP.
