Description : Scientific disciplines are moving out of university lecture halls and directly into school classroomsThis isexactly what happened at the IIS G. Romani School, which participated in the STEM UP project. Promoted by the University of Parma, the initiative was designed to bring students closer to the world of research through practicalactivities and discussions with young scholars.

The activity was part of a systemic effort to promote STEM disciplines (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). It aimed to stimulate interest, curiosity, and awareness regarding scientific careers by proposing an active, laboratory-based approachRomani’s participation stems from the school’s ongoing "Promotion of Scientific Culture" curriculum, which focuses on creating concrete opportunities for learning and career orientationJoining this initiativehighlights the value of direct dialogue with the academic world.

 

Activities

DNA Laboratory: Dr. Letizia Crema led a workshop for second-year Applied Sciences studentsParticipants extractedgenetic material from strawberries, experiencing a fundamental molecular biology technique and applying the scientificmethod firsthand.

A Health Seminar: Alessandro Costa, a medical student, spoke to fourth-year Applied Sciences students about "One Health". This integrated vision connects human, animal, and environmental health—a concept increasingly central to modern global challenges

Guided Reflection: Following the seminar, students analyzed various diseases to identify biological, psychological, social, and environmental factors.

This experience made science feel concrete and accessible, confirming that collaboration between schools and universities is vital for building innovative educational pathways.
