FRBV26 CC- ENGAGE Citizenship Climate fresk at the Halle aux Sucres

The Halle aux Sucres serves as a vital hub for resources and expertise on sustainable urban development. On March 23rd 2026,  our students participated in a collaborative, visual workshop designed to translate objective scientific data into a clear understanding of complex environmental issues.

The session began with a historical introduction to the building itself. As one of the last remaining vestiges of Dunkerque’s 19th-century merchant port, the structure originally served as a sugar warehouse. The decision to repurpose this historic landmark—rather than erasing its industrial past—stands as a testament to the region’s commitment to urban transition and resilience.

Following this introduction, students were divided into two  teams to tackle the "Climate Fresk" challenge. Guided by a facilitator, they used a set of 20 cards and markers to map out the causes, effects, and consequences of climate change. The task demanded active dialogue and a thorough reading of the cards to correctly map the connections

Once the scientific sequence was established, the students took full ownership of the project through a creative phase, transforming their data into a visual mural.

To conclude, the students gathered in a circle for an interactive reflection. By moving forward in response to specific prompts, they engaged in a physical and verbal dialogue, expressing their personal feelings about the climate crisis and brainstorming actionable solutions.

Students successfully decoded the systemic causes and effects of climate change using evidence-based data.The mural exercise fostered teamwork and the ability to communicate complex ideas visually and orally.The final discussion shifted the focus from climate anxiety to collective action, encouraging students to identify tangible steps they can take within their own communities.
