Students visited the archaeological site of Mycenae, one of the most important centers of the ancient Greek world. The visit began at the Lion Gate, where students discussed the symbolism of power, protection, and authority in Mycenaean society. This led to a reflection on how leadership today should also be guided by respect and responsibility—key elements of Olympic values.
The group then explored the Royal Graves (Grave Circle A), where discussions focused on social structure, honor, and the concept of excellence in ancient times. Students were encouraged to compare the idea of “being the best” in Mycenaean society with the Olympic principle of striving for personal excellence rather than dominance over others.
At the Palace complex, students examined the organization of political and social life. They reflected on how cooperation, discipline, and responsibility were necessary for the functioning of the society, drawing parallels with teamwork and fair play in sports.
As an interactive activity, students worked in small groups to identify one Olympic value (respect, excellence, friendship) and connect it with a specific monument or element of the site. Each group presented their ideas, acting as “value guides,” explaining how ancient life in Mycenae reflects values still relevant today.
A final reflection session encouraged students to consider how lessons from the past can shape modern attitudes in sports, education, and everyday life, emphasizing the holistic development promoted by Olympism.
The educational visit continued at the Archaeological Museum of Mycenae English.
After the museum, our team continued with the final stop of our visit , the Treasury of Atreus.
Students gained a deeper understanding of Mycenaean civilization and its relevance to modern values. They strengthened their ability to make connections between history and contemporary life, while improving teamwork, communication, and presentation skills through interactive activities.
