GR26 - CAEC - ENGAGE - Visit to Palamidi Fortress

The educational visit to Palamidi Fortress focused on exploring the monument not only as a historical landmark but also as a symbol of human effort and determination. Students approached the fortress by climbing the well-known steps, experiencing physically the challenge and effort required—an experience directly linked to the Olympic value of excellence through continuous effort. During the exploration of the fortress, emphasis was placed on its complex structure and strategic design. Students discussed how discipline, planning, and responsibility were essential for its construction and use. These elements were connected to the values promoted by Olympism, particularly the idea that success is achieved through dedication, respect for rules, and commitment to a goal. At various points within the fortress, students engaged in observation-based activities, identifying features that reflect organization, resilience, and cooperation. They were asked to consider how such qualities are equally important in sports, where athletes must combine physical ability with mental strength and respect for others. A collaborative task followed, where students worked in groups to create short “value narratives,” imagining themselves as historical figures responsible for the fortress. They reflected on questions such as:
•    What does it mean to act responsibly in difficult situations?
•    How does effort lead to achievement?
•    Why is respect essential in both conflict and cooperation?
The visit concluded with a reflective discussion, encouraging students to transfer these ideas to modern contexts, including sports, school life, and social interactions, reinforcing the Olympic ideals of respect, excellence, and fair play.
Students deepened their understanding of the fortress as a symbol of effort, discipline, and strategic thinking. They were able to connect historical experience with modern values, particularly recognizing the importance of perseverance and respect in achieving personal and collective goals.
