GR26 - CC - Equality - Gender equality in the Olympic Games

The activity took place in the school lab and was structured into several stages focusing on research, discussion, and reflection on the role of women in the Olympic Games.

In the first stage, students were encouraged to share their views on women’s participation in sports today and discuss whether they believe equality has been achieved. The teacher introduced the historical background of the Olympic Games, emphasizing the exclusion of women in Ancient Greece and prompting students to think about how social roles and stereotypes influenced this situation.

In the second stage, students were divided into small groups and assigned different research topics. Some groups focused on women in Ancient Greece, including restrictions, social expectations, and the story of Kallipateira. Other groups explored the first participation of women in the modern Olympic Games, identifying key athletes and important milestones in the gradual inclusion of women. Additional groups examined statistical data on female participation and compared past and present Olympic Games. Students were guided to use reliable sources such as historical texts, official Olympic records, and educational websites.

In the third stage, students organized their findings and prepared presentations. Each group presented its results, highlighting important changes over time and comparing the opportunities available to women in different historical periods. Students were encouraged to use examples and data to support their ideas and to explain how progress has been achieved.

In the final stage, a guided discussion and reflection activity followed. Students considered whether full equality has truly been reached in sports and society, discussed remaining challenges, and reflected on the importance of equal opportunities for all individuals. The activity concluded with students connecting the topic to their own experiences and everyday life.
