The visit to Palamidi Fortress began with an introduction to its historical importance during the Greek War of Independence. Students climbed the famous 999 steps, symbolizing the struggles and perseverance of past generations. Upon reaching the top, they enjoyed a panoramic view of Nafplio, discussing its role as Greece’s first capital and how this shaped national identity.

A guided discussion centered on the theme of peace, analyzing how historical conflicts lead to reconciliation and unity, much like the Olympic Games promote international understanding and cooperation. Students were encouraged to connect the fortress’s past defensive role with the modern necessity for diplomacy and dialogue.

In a final reflective activity, students wrote short essays or sketches inspired by the themes of identity and peace, linking their insights from the visit to the Olympic values of peaceful coexistence and cultural awareness.

Students gained a deeper appreciation of Greece’s struggle for independence and its impact on national identity. They enhanced their ability to analyze historical events from multiple perspectives, understanding how the Olympic values of peace and identity remain relevant in modern society.
