On November 26th, the students of Maryse Conde Collège had the opportunity to meet writer Alain Foix, author of the biography of Jesse Owens. This exchange allowed students to discover the fascinating story of this legendary athlete, as well as to discuss with the author his writing process and the values embodied by Jesse Owens.

Alain Foix began the meeting by introducing himself and explaining why he chose to write about Jesse Owens. He emphasized the importance of this African-American athlete, a four-time gold medalist at the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games, a remarkable achievement in front of Adolf Hitler’s regime.

The author also explained his writing approach: how he conducted his research, selected key moments from Owens’ life, and aimed to portray not only his sporting achievements but also the historical context and social challenges he faced.

The students asked many questions about Jesse Owens’ life, such as:
    •    How did he experience segregation in the United States despite his Olympic success?
    •    Did he receive any rewards or recognition after his victories?
    •    Why is his story still important today?

Alain Foix answered by explaining that, despite his outstanding victory in Berlin, Jesse Owens had to face racial discrimination upon his return to the United States. He was not immediately honored as he deserved, and it was only much later that he received official recognition. The author stressed Jesse Owens’ role as a symbol of courage and the fight against racism.

The meeting ended with a reflection on Jesse Owens’ legacy and the importance of historical memory. The students appreciated this enriching exchange, which helped them better understand the historical context and the values represented by this exceptional athlete.

Some expressed their admiration for Jesse Owens, while others were intrigued by the writing process and how a biography is structured. This meeting successfully combined sports, history, and literature, offering students an educational and inspiring experience.

This meeting was held as part of the Ecritures des Amériques Fastivals.
