IR24 CAE - RESPECT Heritage & Will-Irish Music, Irish Language and Native Traditional GAA Sport​

Irish Music: The Irish music session provided students with a hands-on and immersive experience in traditional Irish culture. Students from the school performed a variety of traditional Irish instruments, such as the tin whistle, fiddle, and bodhrán, to entertain the audience. This performance was accompanied by an informative session that explored the origins of Irish music, its deep roots in history, and its enduring influence across the world today. The lesson highlighted how Irish music has shaped global musical traditions and connected with other cultures, showcasing its presence in various forms of global folk music. Students were able to appreciate the cultural significance of music in Irish society and how it continues to be an important part of both local and international music scenes. ​

GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association):A student-driven PowerPoint presentation introduced the group to the world of GAA sports, including hurling, Gaelic football, and camogie. The presentation explained the origins of these games, their unique rules and regulations, and how they continue to be an integral part of Irish culture. Students learned about the different sports within the GAA and were given practical opportunities to engage with the equipment and basic skills of the games. They also explored the global recognition of hurling, particularly its designation by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, highlighting its cultural importance. The session offered a dynamic mix of theoretical and hands-on learning, helping students connect with Ireland's sporting traditions in an engaging way. ​

Irish Language: The Irish language lesson offered students a chance to explore the basics of Irish (Gaelic), focusing on simple phrases and vocabulary. In addition to learning some basic Irish words, students compared these with words in French and Slovakian, exploring the similarities and differences between the languages. This session encouraged reflection on linguistic connections, helping students see the links between their own languages and the Irish language. Oral communication was an important aspect of the lesson, as students practiced speaking and listening to each other, enhancing their understanding of the language and its cultural context. The lesson emphasised the importance of preserving and promoting the Irish language as part of the country’s rich cultural heritage.

Overall, these events successfully provided students with a comprehensive and multi-dimensional learning experience, fostering cultural awareness, critical thinking, language development, and empathy. The combination of interactive activities, historical reflection, and practical engagement helped students develop a deeper appreciation for Irish culture and history while reinforcing themes of friendship, unity, and understanding.
