The Friendship Tree Hands and Flags Lesson was an interactive and creative way to help students explore the values of friendship. The lesson began with a discussion on the five components of friendship: trust, respect, empathy, support, and communication. Students explored what these qualities mean in the context of their own relationships, and how they can nurture these values in their friendships.

Next, students participated in an art project where they worked in mixed groups to hand-paint flags. Each group was encouraged to design a flag that symbolized one of the five components of friendship. This creative activity allowed students to collaborate, share ideas, and express their personal interpretations of friendship through their artwork.

After the flag designs, students moved on to the Friendship Hands activity. In this part of the lesson, students drew and designed their own "friendship hands"—hands that symbolised their thoughts on what friendship means. Each hand could represent the qualities of friendship that were most important to them. The students were given a creative space to express themselves through drawings, colours, and words.

The lesson concluded with a ceremony where students shared their friendship hands and flags with the group. They explained the meaning behind their designs, discussing how their creations reflected their understanding of friendship. Each student then placed their artwork on the Friendship Tree in the school assembly area, creating a beautiful display that was visible to all members of the school community. This ceremony not only celebrated the artistic efforts of the students but also fostered a sense of connection, as everyone’s contributions came together to symbolise the importance of friendship.

Enhanced Understanding of Friendship; Through discussion and creative expression, students gained a deeper understanding of the five components of friendship. They were able to reflect on and articulate the values that they consider essential in meaningful friendships, enhancing their interpersonal skills and empathy.

Increased Creativity and Collaboration:  The hand-painting and drawing activities provided students with a creative outlet to express their feelings about friendship. Working in mixed groups helped students collaborate, share ideas, and respect each other's contributions. This creative process also enhanced their teamwork and communication skills.

A Strengthened Sense of Community and Belonging: The Friendship Tree ceremony, where students proudly displayed their flags and friendship hands, fostered a strong sense of community within the school. The shared experience of placing their work on display allowed students to celebrate the diversity of thought and expression while reinforcing the importance of friendship in their lives. The visual representation of their collective efforts created a lasting reminder of the school's commitment to friendship, unity, and mutual respect.
