MSTE Maths Week
13 nov. 2024The primary aims of Maths Week were to:
- Foster an enthusiasm and enjoyment of mathematics across all year groups.
- Engage students in interactive and collaborative mathematical activities to develop problem-solving skills.
- Encourage students to see the real-world application of maths beyond the classroom.
- Promote teamwork, particularly through student-led initiatives involving Transition Year (TY) students assisting with various activities.
- Recognize and celebrate the mathematical achievements of students through competitions and awards.
Activities and Highlights:
1st Year Activities: First-year students participated in a Maths Trail around Ballyshannon, where they encountered practical math challenges in real-world settings, encouraging them to apply their classroom knowledge to everyday contexts. Later in the week, they enjoyed a Maths Quiz in the Mercy Hall, working through a range of math puzzles in a lively, collaborative atmosphere. These activities were successfully run with the valuable support of TY students, fostering a spirit of collaboration and mentorship.
Online Maths Competition (Maggie Gough Competition): Second-year, TY, and fifth-year students participated in the national “Maggie Gough Competition,” organized by the Irish Maths Teachers Association (IMTA). This online event allowed students to compete on a larger stage, showcasing their skills and measuring their performance against students from other schools.
Results:
The Maths Week activities were a resounding success, achieving high levels of student engagement and enthusiasm. In the Maggie Gough competition, our students performed exceptionally well, with the top 20 participants receiving certificates of recognition for their accomplishments. This not only highlighted the mathematical talent within our school but also motivated other students to participate in future maths events.
Overall, Maths Week was a wonderful opportunity to foster a love for mathematics, and the positive outcomes were evident in the students' enthusiasm, teamwork, and competitive spirit.
