In Guadeloupe, Carnival is a very lively tradition. It takes place over several weeks with very colorful parades in the towns of the island. Generally drums, brass instruments and whistles accompany them and attract the large crowds who come to watch the show. The short refrains sung and danced by the carnival-goers are drawn from current political events on the island or illustrate major social themes. At La Désirade this year, the schools paraded together around the theme of the Olympic Games. School children wore costumes reminiscent of different sports (Basket ball, Swimming, fooftball..) They wore headdresses with the Olympic rings. The middle school students wore masks in the colors of the flags of the participating countries. They paraded through the village dancing and singing.
