GR24 LC - Perseverance - The Hare & the Tortoise
03 déc. 2024"The Tortoise and the Hare" is one of Aesop's Fables. The account of a race between unequal partners has attracted conflicting interpretations. The fable itself is a variant of a common folktale theme in which ingenuity and trickery (rather than doggedness) are employed to overcome a stronger opponent. The students involved in the Respectol project were divided into groups of 2 students during the course of English. They gathered in a circle for an engaging reading of Aesop's fable, The Hare and the Tortoise, with the reader using animated gestures and varied voice intonations to captivate the audience. They took time to reflect on the key elements of the story and its underlying moral. Ideas were collaboratively noted on a whiteboard, fostering a sense of teamwork and creativity. To reinforce the moral of perseverance, a fun and interactive role-playing activity was introduced, where students had the opportunity to write another version of the story, allowing them to deepen their understanding.
Additionally, they connected the moral to their personal experiences, helping them to see its relevance in their own lives. In the end the students created a new fairy tale with the same content, with heroes that they wanted and names that they found themselves and put a different ending.
Students demonstrated a deeper understanding of perseverance and humility as virtues. They actively engaged in storytelling, role-playing, writing, and discussion, making the lesson memorable. Students learned and used new words related to the fable, for example, persistence, determination, and obstacles. Exposure to the story sparked curiosity about other fables and their lessons. Students grasped that steady effort and determination can lead to success, even when challenges arise. These results contribute to well-rounded individuals capable of tackling challenges in life with determination and thoughtful decision-making. A presentation of the action can be found here
