GR26 - CC - Reconciliation – Stop fighting
17 déc. 2025The activity was implemented in the school lab and aimed to help students understand the importance of the Olympic Games as a symbol of peace from Ancient Greece to the present day. The action was divided into several structured stages to encourage historical understanding, critical thinking, and reflection.
In the first stage, students discussed the role of sport in their daily lives and shared their thoughts on the contrast between peace and war. Through guided questions, they reflected on how war affects societies and how sport can create moments of unity. The teacher introduced the origins of the Olympic Games in Ancient Greece and explained their cultural and social significance.
In the second stage, students worked in small groups and researched historical sources related to the Ancient Olympic Games. They focused on the concept of the Olympic Truce (Ekecheiria), the conditions under which the Games took place, and the importance of temporary ceasefires between city-states. Students examined how athletes and spectators could travel safely even during periods of conflict. Groups were also assigned specific historical cases where the Olympic Games influenced relations between rival city-states.
In the third stage, students organized their findings and prepared presentations. Each group presented historical information and case studies, explaining how sport contributed to peace and cooperation in Ancient Greece. This stage encouraged students to analyze historical evidence and present their ideas clearly.
In the final stage, students compared ancient examples with modern Olympic initiatives related to peace and reconciliation. They discussed whether sport can still promote dialogue in today’s world and reflected on the enduring value of the Olympic Games as a bridge between cultures and nations.
