GRCo25 - CAEC - RESPECT - Visit to Vatheia

In the early afternoon of a beautiful October day, the group of teachers visited the picturesque village of Vatheia, near Gerolimenas and Pyrgos Dirou, in the heart of the Peloponnese. Perched on a hilltop overlooking the sea, Vatheia is renowned for its traditional Maniot tower houses, narrow cobblestone streets, and panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Walking through the village, the participants were immersed in the rich history and architectural heritage of the region, noticing how generations of families had shaped the unique character of the settlement.

The visit offered a meaningful opportunity to connect with local culture, nature, and tradition. Teachers reflected on the Olympic values in everyday life: excellence in human creativity was evident in the preservation of the towers and craftsmanship of the village; respect for cultural diversity and the environment emerged as they observed the harmony between the buildings and the natural surroundings; friendship and collaboration were fostered through shared exploration and lively discussion among the group.

Continuing to Gerolimenas and Pyrgos Dirou, the teachers admired the coastal beauty and historic monuments, learning about local customs, legends, and architectural techniques. The journey emphasized the importance of combining education, cultural heritage, and experiential learning to inspire both personal reflection and professional growth. By connecting history, tradition, and the natural environment, the visit highlighted how education can promote the Olympic spirit beyond sport, encouraging dialogue, understanding, and mutual respect among people from different countries and backgrounds.
