IR24 - PSLLC - JOY – Teaching Volleyball

During the congress at Ireland, each country was assigned a specific sport to teach. For Greece it was Volleyball, since it is quite popular in our country but not so much in Ireland.

On Tuesday 17/9, Colaiste Cholmcille was crowded with pupils. They were from 5 different National Primary schools of the area and they were aged 10-12. The Greek students, accompanied by some Irish students became coaches of Volleyball for the morning. There was a rotation of each school, so as every pupil had the chance to get in touch with every sport. The time was limited for each group (20 minutes) so the coaches only had the chance to present the very basics of the sport, emphasizing on fair play and good practices. Some of the pupils had not come into contact with the sport before, while others already knew the basic rules and were familiar with the ball used in Voleyball.

Lessons took place at the indoor court of the hosting school that was very spacious and was divided in two separate small volleyball courts.

On Thursday 19/9, another 4 primary schools visited Colaiste Cholmcille and the same event took place with different pupils.

On Friday 20/9, all 9 schools visited our Volleyball court and all pupils had the chance to play a match, against their friends. By the end of the session, every participant had the opportunity to both refine their skills and enjoy the thrill of playing in a competitive team environment.

There were no losers, only winners and all the pupils showed team spirit and passion.

The shinny faces of all the kids, younger and older and the enthusiasm they expressed was a proof that the effort was worth it. Some pupils that were very shy at the beginning had the chance to express their selves, a proof that sports can build strong relations between younger and older kids. Through drills and competitive games, students improved their teamwork and communication skills, learning how to work effectively with teammates in fast-paced match situations.
