Initially, students had a discussion about the sources of environmental pollution. They focused mainly on the issue of waste- different types, how it harms the environment and what common people should do to reduce its amount.  Then they were divided into groups of three, each group got a bag for rubbish and their cleaning action started.

They started picking up the rubbish in the school area, then moved on to Greb park (fishing area), they took a walk around the pond and continued along the Poprad river. The  route was around 4 km long. During the cleaning action they managed to collect  9 almost full 60-litre bags of rubbish. The majority of the waste were plastic wrappings, cigarette packs and butts, paper waste and some glass bottles. They didn’t find any plastic bottles as they are returnable.

Finally, students met with Mr. Javorský from TANAP and they had a discussion which was aimed at finding solutions to how to stop the rubbish at the source. They concluded that they hadn’t seen enough rubbish bins, so in their opinion, it is necessary to place more of them in this area. They agreed that if people were more aware and responsible, there would be less rubbish in places where it doesn’t belong.
