LC_ETHICS_Athlete ´s English

The activity took place over the course of two English lessons with 11-12 years old students. First, as a lead-in to the work that would follow, the students watched a video of different sportspeople in action. The students then collaborated on the creation of a dictionary of sports terms, more precisely a picture dictionary in the form of a poster. Based on their preferences and interests, they chose to focus on four sports – football, basketball, swimming and cycling. Together, the class brainstormed the vocabulary that would be included in the dictionary. Through the creation of the dictionary, the students learnt a number of useful vocabulary for sports equipment but also phrases commonly used in conversations between athletes. Thus, they acquired knowledge beyond the assigned curriculum and came in contact with a real-life usage of the language.
The students were very fond of the activity and cherished spending the lesson by working in groups. Not only did they improve their vocabulary but they also strengthened their communication skills and developed their abilities to share responsibilities.
