GR24 EC - HERITAGE – City Tour of Athens

The students go to the centre of Athens where Greek students present for an two hours different sites of the city.
 

Religious heritage: The Orthodox Cathedral of Athens, dedicated to the Annunciation of the Theotokos, is located in Mitropolis Square. Its construction began in 1842 and was completed in 1862. The type of church is a cruciform three-aisled basilica with a dome.
 

Civil heritage: The Old Palace has been, from 1935 until today, the seat of the Hellenic Parliament. It is a neoclassical building, designed by the Bavarian architect of the Bavarian Royal Court, Friedrich von Gertner, and is located in Syntagma Square in Athens. Its construction began in 1836 and was completed in 1847. It was used as a royal palace first by King Otto of Greece and then by King George I of Greece until 1910
 

Cultural heritage: The Megaron of the Academy of Athens is a neoclassical building on Panepistimi Street in Athens, which houses the Academy of Athens, a great scientific institution of Greece. The building of the University of Athens was established to be called the "Propylaia of the University", as in ancient Greek architecture, the propylaea is a monumental gate, a partition between the secular and religious parts of a city. The old Libray of Greece is the third of the iconic buildings of the famous "Athenian trilogy", designed by the Danish architect Hans Christian Hansen (1803-1883).

The students from all countries discover the capital of Greece and its history through its architectural and artistic heritage. In particular, they learnt that Athens is an important city where democracy was born. Also, they got to know each other (first day in Greece) in an informal and easy way.
