Together with students we have visited Tatraská galérie where a director of a Jewish museum of Bratislava M.A. Michal Vaněk PhD. gave a talk about the life's story of David Unreich. The talk described the period and events of Holocaust but from a different point of a view, from the point of a sportsman. The speaker talked about the tragic loss of David parents and sister in Auschwitz. He described his sport achievements and even how he stood up to defense of the jewish community in Bratislave and together with others defended their neighborhood against violent attacks of Nazis.

His success brought him to United states, where you figuratively challenged Hitler to a duel on the cover of newspapers. He then won against a german wrestler in the sold out stadium, becoming the world champion. After the speech, the students could view info posters about his life or the gallery's art exhibition on the subject of Art and the Holocaust.

The students liked the talk as it described a captivating personal story of a champion and how sport can be used to enforce justice and goodness. They also liked that they were introduced to a David, who they were not familiar with before. They got to know his life story and learned a little more about the Jewish community, which they became aware of through the topic of sports. Thanks to David Unreich's life story, students were shown how he tried to erase national differences, especially between Germans and Jews, through sports during the World War II.
