30 janv. 2026Aims and skills targeted
The aims of this lesson were to deepen students’ understanding of national identity through the history and symbolism of the French and Irish flags, and to explore how these symbols represent justice, determination, and liberty. Students developed research skills, presentation and public speaking skills, historical awareness, cultural understanding, and language skills. The lesson also promoted confidence, active listening, respect for different perspectives, and collaboration between French and Irish students.
Description :
French and Irish students prepared and delivered presentations on the history of their national flags. Each presentation explored the origins, colours, and symbols of the flag, with particular attention to the historical struggles, values, and movements connected to justice, determination, and liberty. Students explained how these flags emerged from periods of social and political change and how they came to represent national identity and shared values.
In addition, students examined how the French and Irish flags are used in modern culture. This included discussion of national celebrations, sporting events, public demonstrations, art, and everyday life. Students highlighted how the flags continue to act as powerful symbols of unity, freedom, and determination in contemporary society.
The session encouraged discussion and comparison between the two cultures, allowing students to ask questions and reflect on similarities and differences in how national symbols are viewed and used. Teams completed their presentation with a prepared quiz to check for understanding, this itself developed computer skills and helped with student self-reflection.
Students presented their partner with a flag from their country.
