GRCO25-Cultural visit to Monemvasia

The group visited one of the most unique medieval fortified towns in Greece. The name Monemvasia means ‘single entrance,’ referring to the narrow causeway that connects the rock to the mainland. Founded in the 6th century AD, Monemvasia became an important Byzantine trading and naval center. Over the centuries, it passed under Byzantine, Venetian, and Ottoman rule, each leaving their mark on the architecture and culture of the town.”

Historical Highlights. Monemvasia was built as a fortress to protect inhabitants from invasions after the Slavic raids. It soon grew into a wealthy commercial hub. Venetians fortified it further, adding western architectural influences. The Ottomans controlled the town until the 19th century, and the population became a mix of Christians and Muslims. Today, Monemvasia is a preserved medieval settlement, attracting visitors worldwide for its history, architecture, and atmosphere. 

It has a lot of churches. Amongst the most famous are Church of Agia Sofia (Saint Sophia), located on the upper town, dramatically perched on the cliff. It was originally built in the 12th century, modeled after Hagia Sophia in Constantinople. It offers stunning views of the sea and represents Byzantine architectural excellence.

We started our walking tour from Christos Elkomenos, the cathedral of Monemvasia, and we made a presentation about the place and the monuments that we were going to visit. After that we visited the churches of Christos Elkomenos, Panagia Myrtidiotissa & Panagia Chrysafitissa. We continued our walking tour in the castle town, climbed to the upper town of Monemvasia, admired the stunning view and the temple of Agia Sophia.

As we were walking through the cobblestone alleys, noticed how the architecture blends Byzantine, Venetian, and Ottoman elements.
