The game Take a Step Forward is often used in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) training or educational settings to help participants reflect on privilege, identity, and systemic inequality. Participants stand in a straight line, shoulder to shoulder. A teacher reads a series of statements. If the statement applies to you, you take a step forward.
The session began with a brief overview of key ideas such as injustice, discrimination, and systemic inequality. Students were introduced to how birthplace and skin color can shape people’s experiences and opportunities around the world.
After that, students participated in an engaging physical activity where they responded to statements by stepping forward if the statements applied to them or someone they identify with. Statements focused on real-life experiences of inequality, such as being treated differently due to appearance or having limited opportunities because of birthplace. This exercise visibly illustrated disparities and sparked powerful emotional responses.
After the game, students shared their feelings and insights. Discussions covered how it felt to “start behind” and the impact of skin color and birthplace on people’s lives. Many students reflected on personal observations and shared examples of unfair treatment they had witnessed or experienced.
We examined a few compelling stories of individuals facing injustice, including historical and contemporary examples. Students analyzed the barriers these individuals encountered and the effects on their lives, deepening their understanding of systemic issues.
Students expressed their thoughts through short writings, imagining how life might differ if they were born in another place or had a different skin color. Reflections focused on concepts of fairness and the importance of advocating for equality.
The session concluded with a group brainstorming on how students can promote fairness and respect within their communities. Students showed enthusiasm for continuing conversations and taking positive actions related to social justice.
