FRJB25 PSLL HERITAGE History of Olympics
11 mars 2025Students are divided into several groups of four.
First activity Olympic playing cards – Happy families game
The first part of the activity is to match a card with descriptions on it to another card with a date or photo and the name of a sportsperson. There are forty-two cards of each type to match, that is to say six cards for each family.
By reading carefully the descriptions, the pupils can normally find a lot of clues ( gender, sport, year, sporting performance, or an element that has marked the history of sport , etc.) that will enable them to make the right associations.
In a second phase, the pupils have to put the forty-two cards together by category. So they have to find what six cards have in common and put them together to form a family. The difficulty is that some cards can fit into more than one family. They will then have to proceed by elimination. The seven categories are : the Winter Olympic Games, the Summer Olympic Games, mascots, important dates in the history of the modern Olympic Games, the Paralympic Games and, finally, women who have played an important role and who have campaigned for mixed games.
Second activity Olympic symbols
Students must first learn the history and symbols of the Olympic flag and listen to the anthem. They start by watching a video of the Olympic anthem with subtitles for the lyrics. They can then pick out the words they think are important to highlight. The pupils then look for the meaning of the 5 Olympic rings and their colour. Finally, students will create their own Olympic flag, using the colors of the Olympics, and write on it the words or mottos they feel best represent the values of Olympism.
Creation of a card game
Create an Olympic flag and anthem for each team, and help them understand the universal nature of Olympism
