GR24 - PSLLC - Citizenship - When am I an active citizen
09 déc. 2024Active citizen is a person who is interested in and involved in social and political issues and activities in their country or community. Active citizenship is a pedagogical approach to give pupils a practical experience of democratic action and community involvement. It involves pupils in learning how to take part with others in activities designed to make a positive difference to the world around them. The students involved in the Respectol project gathered during the course of English. The session began with a group discussion about what it means to be an active citizen. Students were given a list of scenarios, volunteering, voting, helping a neighbor, and recycling, and were asked to identify which ones demonstrate active citizenship and why. Debate and discussion were carried out to explore the nuances of being an active citizen. School mediation and conflict resolution were introduced, emphasizing skills like communication, empathy, and problem-solving. These skills were linked to European citizenship, discussing values like tolerance, diversity, and peaceful resolution of disputes, and examples of European initiatives that align with these skills, such as the Erasmus+ program or EU youth policies.
Students were guided in designing a presentation that would be informative, visually appealing, and shareable on social media platforms.
Students gained a clearer understanding of what it means to be an active citizen and the importance of this role. Their awareness of European values, such as diversity, tolerance, and peaceful conflict resolution, was strengthened. Additionally, students improved their ability to express ideas, listen actively, and present information effectively. Analyzing the concept of active citizenship and the role of school mediation enhanced their reasoning and decision-making skills.
