FRG24-MC-SHARE universal European Day of languages

 In our secondary school we didn’t only celebrate the European Day of Languages, but we had an entire week of celebration. During this week of celebrations, students took several actions in their English, Spanish and Biology classes. This year’s European Day of Languages in France was based on the Olympic Games and the theme being “The important thing is communication”, we therefore worked on their communication skills.

We started our week on Monday 18th March by the opening of our Olympic Week with a symbolic olympic flame (crafted by a 7th grade student) which was relayed during recess from a student to another.
During the week, in Spanish classes, students from 6th to 9th Grades worked on Spanish Olympic athletes. In each grade they had to create their own poster of a Spanish athlete. At the end of the week, their Spanish teacher organized a competition to select the best poster. On Friday 22nd March all students gathered in the courtyard to sing "La cancion de los deportes"  and to read the "Juegos Olimpicos" poem. 
In English classes each grade had a different task. In 6th grade we worked on the notion of Fair Play and Foul Play and students had to create their own poster of Fairplay and Foulplay athletes. In 7th grade the worked on the notion of inclusion and after watching Rising Phoenix documentary, they had to chose an paralympic athlete and research his/her performances in previous paralympic games. In 8th grade we studied the impact of steroids on athletes performances. The students had also a lesson on steroids in Biology class to gain awareness of the dangers and sides effects on the body. At the end of the week we organized a debate on whether or not athletes using steroids should keep their olympic medals. Finally in 9th grade, students had to collect informations on our local olympic athletes since Guadeloupe is a "Land of Champions" and each one of them created a poster on a different local athlete.
