EC - INCLUSION – Disability novels

The students worked for several weeks on disability as a social issue. They studied literary texts from different periods and in different genres (essays, fairy tales, novels, fables, etc.) to master the concepts related to this topic, become aware of the problems faced by disabled people and the attitudes of society that contribute to their exclusion or inclusion. Other documents were read and discussed to bring the topic up to date, in particular European press articles. 

During these few weeks, they were asked to read a contemporary work of their choice on disability featuring a disabled character and create a reading sheet presented in a free form (video, audio, poster, slide show) in which they had to research the author, present the important stages of the story, define the type of disability of their character, identify the situations of discrimination/exclusion of which he is a victim, and the way he is viewed by society. 

This initial approach was supplemented by a more personal reading of the work in which each student had to select a text representative of the topic of disability and a quotation that touched him or her, and justify his or her choices by developing 3 arguments. Each student then had to explain why they had chosen this book and promote it. 

Finally, each book was linked to the RESPectOL value that seemed to be best illustrated in the story.
