CAE - PEACE - la guerre de troie n'aura pas lieu in comic strips2

First the students read and analyse Giraudoux’s play "The Trojan War will not take place". They particularly work on the context in which this play was written. Giraudoux, wounded twice during the First World War, was an ardent defender of peace. He wrote this play in 1934-1935, as dictatorships rose in Europe and the 1929 crisis continued on the eve of the Second World War : he drew a parallel between the situation in Europe in the 1930s where everyone saw the war coming without really reacting and the Trojan War in antiquity, which is also echoed by the current war in Ukraine.

After that, the students go on to do more in-depth research which they compile into a slide show in French, which they summarise in a vignette in English. Their research focuses on :

Finally, the students divide all the scenes of the play : everyone is asked to rewrite the scene he is charged with in the form of a cartoon board. The students in addition are responsible for the presentation of the final comic (first and fourth cover).

The students work on 2 historical periods (the Trojan War and the World War II) and 2 ancient and modern works (Homer’s Iliad and the Trojan War will not take place of Giraudoux). They can draw parallels, identify common mechanisms in times of war and peace, which can allow them to better understand current events and war in Ukraine. 

They are very enthusiastic to create together their own rewriting of Giraudoux’s play in the form of a comic strip, which requires a lot of successive tasks and organization, to select the ideas they wish to keep in the work and those they choose to update, organize their different comic strips, write the texts in English and draw according to their individual skills.
