While the practice of nationality swapping in sports traces back as far as the Ancient Olympics, it seems to have increased over the past decades. Cases of Olympic athletes who switched their national allegiances are often surrounded with controversy and they challenge established discourses of national identity as the question ‘who may represent the nation?’

The students involved in the Respectol project were divided into groups of 2 students during the course of IT .

They searched the internet and online newspapers and found cases of athletes who competed with the Greek flag but where born in a different country and athletes who competed with a foreign flag but where born in Greece.

A discussion followed about how fair is for an athlete to change the flag he/she competes with and the rules determine the conditions under which an athlete is eligible to compete for a country, and the conditions under which a sport nationality can be changed. They understood the determination of athletes to reach at a higher level and how that determination affects their decisions.

In the end the students created a presentation with their findings

A presentation of the action can be found here
