FRJB25 MSTE UNIVERSAL - PLUS Workshops (Lights & Climate change)
08 nov. 2025The workshop also showed that light goes far beyond what the human eye can see, including invisible wavelengths like infrared and ultraviolet. Students learned how scientists use these different types of light to study natural phenomena and explore space. This helped them appreciate the essential role of light in scientific discovery.During the workshop, students explored several scientific activities based on the theme of light. They experimented with laser reflection, using mirrors to direct a laser beam toward targets and learning how angles influence the path of light. They also discovered ultraviolet light and fluorescence by observing how certain materials glow under a UV lamp.
In a creative activity, they tried shadow theatre, identifying geometric shadows and making animal shapes with their hands. They then modelled solar and lunar eclipses using simple objects to understand how these phenomena occur.
Students also observed light dispersion by using a prism to create a rainbow from white light. In addition, they raced solar-powered cars, which showed how light energy can be transformed into electrical and mechanical energy.
With a thermal camera, they explored infrared light and saw temperature differences displayed in colours. Finally, they learned about 3D vision, discovering how each eye sees a slightly different image and how the brain creates the impression of depth.
During this activity, students explored how Dunkirk is working toward a low-carbon future. The session highlighted the local trajectory toward sustainability, showing how Dunkirk is inventing new solutions for tomorrow’s world. They also took part in the Climate Fresk workshop, a collaborative activity that helps participants understand the causes and consequences of climate change. Through this method, students discussed resilience, adaptation strategies, and the risks linked to global warming.
It encouraged critical thinking and helped them realise how both individuals and communities can act to reduce their impact on the planet.
The students gained a clearer scientific understanding of light and climate mechanisms, allowing them to better interpret natural phenomena. They developed stronger environmental awareness and recognised the importance of individual and collective action for a sustainable future. They also improved their teamwork and communication skills by collaborating, sharing ideas, and solving problems together.
