The Erasmus+ class (1st year) go to Studio 43 to watch Charlie Chaplin's film “City Lights” (1931). 

The students are then asked to research the filmmaker and the film from two values of the RESpectOl project : perfection and inclusion.

•Firstly, they have to learn more about Charlie Chaplin, and in particular understand why he is considered a perfectionist, from his work on “City Lights” : his stubborn desire to shoot his film in silent, more than a year's relentless work on the script, the choice of actress to play the blind girl, the increase in the number of shots, his fixed ideas, and so on.
•Next, they are asked to think about the two characters, the tramp and the blind girl, as social outcasts, listing the situations of isolation in which they find themselves or the exclusion they suffer.
•Finally, they are invited to ask themselves about the emotions they experienced in the film, listing the scenes that moved them and those that made them laugh.

Once this research has been completed, the students are asked to fill it in a summary sheet organised into 3 categories (perfection, exclusion/inclusion, their feelings). They have to justify each answer with 3 elements and illustrate it with an image :

-How was Charlie Chaplin a perfectionist when he made “City Lights” ?

-How is “City Lights” a silent film with sound ?

-How is the vagabond excluded from society ? / How does the young girl's blindness isolate her ?

-Which scene moved you the most ? / Which scene made you laugh the most ?

 

All the summary sheets are collected and some students present theirs to the class. They can see that the scenes they have chosen (the most moving / the most comic) vary greatly from one student to another.
